Celebrate Juneteenth with These 10 Festive Activities

Every holiday is important, if you're looking for ways to commemorate this important day, here are 10 festive activities to help you honor the occasion.

1. Host a Juneteenth BBQ get together

Gather your friends and family for a traditional BBQ with all including or by plate, which means everyone brings something. Enjoy some delicious food, good company, and celebrate the spirit of Juneteenth together. Play joyful music to go with the occasion and dance.

2. Attend a Juneteenth Parade

Check out a local Juneteenth parade to experience the vibrant colors, music, and energy of the celebration. Join in the festivities and show your support for the community. Check the local listings or your local government websites and most likely they have something fun planned. Ask your friends or family to join in and perhaps you may be part of the parade as well. Show off your style

3. Watch a Juneteenth Film

Take some time to watch a film that highlights the history and significance of Juneteenth. Learn more about the struggles and triumphs of African Americans throughout history. There are quite a few of books, articles, documentaries and researched material to refresh your knowledge. It's fun to learn!

4. Visit a Museum or Cultural Center

Explore a museum or cultural center that showcases African American history and culture. Take a look at your local museums or art centers, most of them offer free admission in such important days. Past or present, pieces or materials for Juneteenth will be there.  Educate yourself and gain a deeper understanding of the impact of Juneteenth. At the same time you’ll be supporting historians. Cultural centers usually support local artist and showcase their work, you can too. Also, museums or cultural centers share a lot of free resources and support for the public, where you may find your next big adventure.

5. Volunteer in Your Community

Give back to your community by volunteering at a local organization that supports African American causes. Make a difference and spread the message of unity and equality. This one is really simple, all you need is yourself to show up and the there for the cause that speaks to you, a shelter, food bank, retirement home, teens at risk and much more. Most of the time is the tasks or work required are really simple such as answering the phone, handing out papers, talking to a person for 5 minutes at a time, share knowledge about certain topics, or help someone with their taxes. You’ll feel seriously great after gifting your time to a local charity that supports a cause that is important to you. Volunteer!

6. Host a Juneteenth Potluck

Gather your friends and neighbors for a potluck dinner featuring traditional African American dishes. At home or at a park where you can have a good time while savoring some seriously delicious cuisine. Share recipes, stories, and laughter as you celebrate together. If grandma wants to keep the recipe in the family, we’ll maybe keep it in the family for now but try new dishes.   

7. Organize a Juneteenth Book Club

Select a book that focuses on African American history or culture and start a Juneteenth book club. Reading is one of the most underrated activity we have in modern tech era. Reading, expands our knowledge, relaxes our brain, and makes us smarter, how cool is that. So, call your favorite caffe shop or book a study room at your local library and make that book club a reality, it’s free!

While meeting, engage in meaningful discussions and learn from each other's perspectives. What the book is about, what it’s really showing the reader, changes to our perspectives, lessons learned and future outcomes for a brighter future. 

8. Create Juneteenth Crafts

Get creative and make Juneteenth-themed crafts to decorate your home or share with others. No craft is too small or too big, with fun colors, a bit of creativity and respect, all art is welcome. Embrace your artistic side and express your appreciation for this important day.  Have a happy art making!

9. Attend a Juneteenth Festival

Join a local Juneteenth festival to experience live music, dance performances, food vendors, and more. Immerse yourself in the culture and celebrate with the community. Art festivals are the best recipe for having a good time. Do you wan to treat yourself with a yummy meal or snack? They have it! Do you want to slash party, well there’s free music there. Usually, art festivals are free entrance and only you pay want you eat. Of course, there is some genuine art as well, so if you want to support local artists or our store, that’s your chance.

10. Reflect and Give Thanks

Take a moment to reflect on the significance of Juneteenth and give thanks for the freedom and opportunities you have today. Honor the past, celebrate the present, and look towards a brighter future.
